Writing helps me to make sense of the world: to put the hard times in perspective and bring the good times to the foreground. As many cancer patients know, sometimes the good times are not good days but instead good hours and good moments in the midst of the difficulty. That is reason all the more to shine light on them and help them to be seen, to be felt, and to be shared.

In The Promising Present, I explore topics such as coping with cancer, pursuing your dreams, inspiring yourself and others, and general life advice. Through it all, I encourage you to dwell in the promising present. To make your home in the gratitude and happiness that the good, best parts of you have built.

Words for Democracy is at it sounds. We live in a time when the true spirit of America is in danger of being lost. Our definitions of liberty and justice are as varied as our news sources. On one street in America, you may find as many opinions on what it means to be an American as there are houses on that street. I mourn the slumber of a shared American identity in which we all called a dictator a dictator, in which due process was an expectation and not a debate, and in which 'my fellow Americans' meant all citizens, not just those who voted for your side. Through my writing, I seek to awaken a shared devotion to the spirit of America - to walk together toward our most pride-worthy and compassionate ideals and away from our cruelest and most self-centered whims.

Welcome, Reader. I am glad you are here with me.

Fair warning: I sometimes use strong language. Why? Because sometimes it's needed.
